Celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month

Celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month

Happy 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month!  Let’s celebrate the journey and recognize the ongoing challenges. Share your thoughts below! How are you honoring this month?

What is 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month?

Every October, we celebrate the history, achievements, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual+) individuals and communities. All the while promoting action to challenge hateful ideas and gain equitable solutions

Did you know: GSD which stands for gender and sexually diverse is becoming more popular as an alternative to the longer acronym

Important events and milestones worth celebrating

Two crucial events that have happened in the past 100 years are the Stonewall Riots and the Obgerefell v. Hodges decision. Stonewall Riots were in 1969, when the New York Police Department attempted to raid a club called the Stonewall Inn. Protesters, many of whom were trans and racialized, fought back against the unfair and discriminatory practices members of the queer community faced. Obgerefell v. Hodges was a 2015 Supreme Court case that legalized the right to same-sex marriage. This marked an acceptance of same-sex couples in the legal system. The US had historically neglected couples from gaining rights and privileges associated with marriage

Why This Month Matters

It is crucial as even though 2SLGBTQIA+ people are being honored and welcomed into certain circles, and progress is being made, there is substantial efforts being made to limit, target, and attack gender and sexually diverse communities. It is important then to continue to fight for visibility and equality

Recent Successes and Shortcomings

There have been significant advancements for queer rights in recent years and an increased effort to include and honor them. However, this has happened in tandem with an increase in dangerous rhetoric about gender and sexually diverse folks

    • Anti-trans Bills have risen throughout the country (658 bills introduced and 165 passed)

Community Responses

However, this month is also about the community. To celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month, organizations across the country are hosting events, workshops, and campaigns to promote visibility and support for queer rights.
